Interrupt the curve with well-timed recalls and it flattens; ignore it and even a perfectly memorized page quietly dissolves. That is the whole story in one paragraph. The fact has a discoverer and a date. In the 1880s, a German psychologist named Hermann Ebbinghaus measured his own forgetting with a rigor nobody had attempted before, and the "forgetting curve" he drew remains one of the most replicated findings in psychology. The Man Who Measured Forgetting

Ebbinghaus's problem was that memory seemed unmeasurable. You cannot time how long "knowing something" lasts if you cannot control what is learned, how well, and when. His solution was severe: he experimented on himself, alone, for years.

To strip away the shortcuts that meaning provides, he invented nonsense syllables — consonant-vowel-consonant fragments like ZOF and KEB with no associations to hook onto. He memorized list after list of them to a fixed standard (two flawless recitations), waited a controlled interval — twenty minutes, an hour, a day, a week, a month — and then measured what remained.

His measuring instrument was his second great invention: the savings method. Instead of asking "can I still recall the list?" — a crude yes/no — he relearned each list to the same standard and counted how much less time or how many fewer repetitions the relearning took. If a list originally took twenty minutes and relearning it a day later took ten, half the original effort had been "saved." Savings detect memory that recall misses: a list he could not reproduce at all often still relearned faster than a fresh one. Memory persists below the surface of recall.

Honesty requires the caveats. This was one man testing himself, with material deliberately drained of meaning, in the 1880s. What the Curve Actually Shows

Three features of the curve matter for hifz:

  • The steepest loss is immediate. Forgetting is fastest in the first hours and days after learning. A page finished at Isha has already begun decaying by Fajr. This is why the most important review of a new passage is the earliest one.
  • The curve flattens on its own. Whatever survives the first days decays much more slowly afterward. Forgetting never quite stops, but it slows dramatically — which is why month-old memorization feels stable compared to week-old memorization.

Practical Review Windows for New Memorization

The exact intervals matter less than their shape: dense early, sparse late, tightening whenever recall breaks.   • Same day: recite the new passage from memory a few hours after memorizing it — before sleep at the latest. This is the highest-value review you will ever give it.
  • Next morning: recite it from memory again, ideally in salah (prayer) or to a teacher, before starting anything new. If it will not come back cleanly, today's new lesson can wait.
  • Across the first week: it rides in your sabqi tier — recited daily, connected to the passages before and after it so it does not survive only as an island.
  • Weeks two to four: every few days, still from memory, still checked against the mushaf afterward for drift.
  • After a month or two: it graduates into the manzil rotation — weekly at first, stretching toward the longer cycle as it proves stable.

When the Curve Wins Anyway

Sometimes the curve wins a battle. You miss a month for exams, an illness, a newborn — and open the mushaf to find whole surahs in ruins. Two things are true in that moment.

First, the loss is real, and pretending otherwise leads people to quietly abandon hifz out of shame. Second, the loss is shallower than it looks.
